by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: STXI Cast , trackback In another case of you heard it here first, both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter just confirmed the TrekMovie.com scoop that Zoe Saldana has been picked to be the new Uhura for the new Star Trek movie. THR notes that Saldana is in ‘final negotiations,’ but Variety reports that Saldana has indeed ’signed on’ as the Enterprise’s communications officer originally portrayed by Nichelle Nichols. As reported here earlier, Saldana is also the star of James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar which which is currently filming and TrekMovie.com sources indicate that dealing with conflicting schedules was the focus of negotiations. Saldana joins Anton Yelchin (Chekov), Zachary Quinto (Spock) and Leonard Nimoy (older Spock). Still no word on Scotty, Sulu, McCoy and of course…..Kirk! |

Click the link. There's a YouTube clip that shows she knows a thing or two about Trek already.

wow, she isn't a bad choice looks wise, however i haven't ever sene her in anything so i dunno if she will be any good.
still, keep the stars rolling, im really eager to know more of them paramount! i wonder how many unknowns they will actually use?
another person id have said would be good as Uhura would have been;
Aisha Tyler, who is a good actress, and fairly good looking/matches Uhura i think.
also, who the hell is Anton Yelchin? he is in negotiations for the role of Pavel Checkov. he doesnt look the part to be honest, but then again he looks young and boyish enough... is he rushen?
anyhow, its nice to see Star treks page on IMDB becoming a bit more filled out now, finally.

I like this choice for many reasons.
1) She's as hot as Nichelle Nichols was then;
2) Well...there really isn't a second reason. :p :wub:

Looks like she'll make a good Uhura. :thumbs:
IDK about
Anton Yelchin..maybe it's the hair..but he's Russian so that should help him play the role, I suppose.

At least he wont have to put on an accent then... i hope its not a really strong accent though cus i find it hard understanding it otherwise hehe. and i agree its probably the hair, but im sure it will be quite tidy for the film.

she is very hot and i am sure she will do well in the role...
i still can't shake the feeling they have bigger plans for all of this, i mean to go through all of this trouble to find people that LOOK like the originals all just for one movie isn't logical. i still think there ultimate goal is to do a total remake of the original series wich i am not sure is a very good idea.
but oh well not much anyone can do about it now since they start filming soon if they already haven't started.

i think actually it is important to find people that will be able to keep alive the characters we know and love. unless they want to go a completely different direction with the characters, they cant just do it half way in either direction, they either have to fit very well or not at all for it to work.

I thought that the more I'd hear about the new movie, the worse I would feel about it, but it's actually going the other way for me. After seeing the actors that will take over the roles, I'm actually looking forward to seeing it!
fleshandblood - September 20, 2007 01:46 PM (GMT)
I'm actually getting fairly excited about it too. i didn't think i would but the closer it gets the more i want to know about it and the more pleased i am with the results...

I'm not digging a remake of TOS. Not AT ALL. A prequel of the series sure but don't tread on something as sacred as TOS. Canon was created from TOS. How can they remake the same series with different storylines but play the same characters w/o fracking it all up?
I also don't want them changing the characters with the new movie. Get these new actors to BE the characters as they were or find someone else.

trekkies are in a catch 22 now, if the movie doesn't fair that well Trek is probably dead for an extended period of time, if not forever
if it's a huge hit then they'll probably make a sequel, or string of them with the same cast, and logically pulling a BSG and modelling a new remake of TOS after it
and I highly doubt the actors are going to 'be' the original characters, the 'leaked' descriptions for the charactors in the casting sheet supports this :sarcastic:
you're right on with the canon thing, if they turn it into a remake then all the other series' and the events in them become irrelevant and basically reset back to zero

BSG worked because the show didn't have the cult following Trek does. Those characters weren't as well known and let's face it, the original BSG wasn't even in the same quadrant as Trek. However, the BSG remake could have crashed and burned but instead it became SO much better than the original so hats off to them for that. I just don't think I could take a TOS remake. :crazy:
And as you said, it would nullify ever series AND movie after it.

I only brought up BSG because since it became a huge hit redoing stuff seems to be a popular idea again, but you're absolutely correct, the original BSG kind of sucked and so it's not like making a better BSG than the original would have been super hard
TOS on the other hand will be much more difficult, and a huge risk, because lets face it cheesy/dated SFX aside, TOS has been a huge part of popculture, they're definitely gambling here, they'll either make it big, or put Trek six feet under
BX - September 24, 2007 08:43 AM (GMT)
for Raj and Darren, if the wrighters cared about cannon they wouldn't be making his movie to begin with, they never would have made Enterprise either.
maybe they want to redo TOS to match the NEW cannon of Enterprise? :wtf: :crazy:
