Title: Will go-go boots and miniskirts...
Description: really be fashion in the 23rd century?

TiberiusK - September 29, 2006 01:10 AM (GMT)
On one hand, we could argue that women's fashion on TOS was due to 1960s fashion standards which are outdated by today's standards (and likely will remain so in the future)...

Or, otoh, perhaps by the 23rd century, women will feel liberated enough to wear go-go boots and miniskirts all the time.

What say you?

Love the look of go go boots and miniskirts.

Moondance - September 29, 2006 01:20 AM (GMT)
I saw a girl wearing something Sunday that was nearly an exact copy of something I wore clubbing when in high school.

Unless fashion people do something original, it'll be around.

Fashion always repeats itself. Who'd a thunk we would ever see a mohawk again yet here they are.

I'm looking forward to beehives coming back

are humans even going to be alive in the 23rd century? :sarcastic:

CroBob - September 29, 2006 04:35 AM (GMT)
I will not marry a woman who does not wear miniskirts.

however i doubt that miniskirts etc will ever be suitable uniform... so i odnt think they will be worn whatever time it is. casual is different.

WishfireOmega - September 29, 2006 08:21 AM (GMT)
Why would women feel liberated by wearing miniskirts? "Hey, I feel liberated, so I'll wear something longer than I'm used to..."

Liberated from early 21st century "fashion," maybe...

Everyone will be into naturism by then. Thankfully extensive use of designer babies will make this a more attractive prospect than it would be today.

They will wear a load bearing vest, go go boots and spray on protective film.

Actually, that's exactly how Nichols, Barrett and Whitney described wearing these uniforms - they thought the skorts (they were not true skirts) were very liberating at the time! (Remember, women were just getting rid of wearing "foundation" garments like girdles at that time).

In the "shirtsleeve" environment of a space ship (with gravity,of course) the mini-uniform would be comfortable, and perhaps make a certain amount of sense (if those in charge at the time thought so). One would hope the men would have some more comfortable fatigue than the tunic, black pants and boots (like the coveralls we see now and then or the shorts our own astronauts wear on the space station).

Even back when the show was in it's original run, as a kid, I never thought the women's uniforms made much sense on most planetary missions (except perhaps for diplomatic ones - like to the Haalkans! ). Chapel beaming down in one to the frozen planet where they thought they found Corby was particularly silly.

That being said, google "New York Zouave" and check out the ACTUAL uniform worn by those troops during the American Civil War - NO ONE today would ever call them practical, comfortable or safe - yet they were worn proudly! So who's to say what uniforms will look like 250 years from now!

I was talking from a 2006 point of view, not a 1966...

Exactly what I was going to say. They'll be in fashion at some point in the 23rd century.

WishfireOmega - September 30, 2006 07:55 PM (GMT)
If fashion repeats itself, then when are we going to be seeing stuff like this again...
