Title: Would Roddenberry have been offended by DS9's
Description: use of religion?

TiberiusK - September 25, 2006 11:25 PM (GMT)
A starfllet captain becomes a prophet, deeply moved by spirituality and religious quests, worshipped by a population in some manner. Would that have completely pissed off GR?

Um...why would it?

He never claimed that there should be no religion on other planets.

I don't think it's the use of religion that he would disagree with. It's all the war and violence that he would have taken issue with.

Who cares? DS9 was entertaining. It was unlike other Trek shows, and I always thought that was on purpose. GR, I doubt, would have made it the same way. It's whole appeal is that it's not just another Trek series, where we explore, meet god-like figures, and everything's happy by the end of each episode.

well he did make a few rather bizarre episodes about religion himself. "who mourns for the adonas" or whatever it was called was about people claiming to be earths Gods.... ST5 was about finding a corrupt God, and Q was used in a godlike fashion occasionally too. i don’t think he would have been too upset. however he might have disagreed with the ending episode where Sisco just buggers off and dies.

CroBob - September 27, 2006 08:40 AM (GMT)
Sisco didn't die.
